Metuchen – Borough’s center in the city center is preparing to welcome an eclectic mix of new businesses that offer everything, from good eating to performance and art classes.
This mix is part of the key to making the business circle a living place to live, work, purchased and visited, according to Dawn Mackey, the executive director of Metuchen at the center of the Alliance (MDA).
“If you see a vacancy, there is absolutely activity and interest and many future people who make their step and negotiate,” Mackey said. “We are in this great place now where I have a list of businesses who want to be here … I think it speaks extremely well about the trajectory of this community.”
Here’s what businesses are working to open their doors.
Acting outside

To those who dream of walking on the red carpet, acting out, An acting, music theater, piano and voice school, is planned to open on 418 Main St., the former Papillon & Company, this summer, according to Mackey.
The school has had a location in Brooklyn for over 20 years and it opened a Westfield location in 2020.
Outside acting will offer bids in Metuchen for both children and adults, including makeshift classes. It will also offer open germs nights.
Students from acting abroad have continued to appear in performances in Broadway, in “Law and Order” episodes and have been admitted to Juilliard, according to the company’s website. Registration for the summer camp program is already available online.
“Bringing an exciting, interactive experimental space for Metuchen is really critical because it is about creating a balance in a changing retail paradigm,” Mackey said. “Something’s something to do except just dinner and there is a good chance if you come for it, you’ll stay for other things.”
Acting outside will be a welcome addition to the already flourishing arts scene of Metuchen, as it is the forum theater home and has plans for the Metuchen Art Circle.

Lore pottery is planning to open before the summer on 434 Main St., which is the previous house of the jewel shop. The space is split in half.
Owner Katie Piro grew up in Metuchen and worked as an art teacher in Metuchen and Hunterdon County while holding a home -based pottery business for the past five years.
Lore ceramics will have a classroom studio, as well as a store that sells Piro’s creations.
“This is the secret retail sauce – you have to have something that people just can’t appear in the Amazon and buy,” Mackey said. “You have to have something with that special touch and I think this will be a really great addition.”
